A Fiscal Hawk and a Social Progressive

Alec Purves believes you can be tough on the city’s finances and strongly progressive on social issues at the same time. He is a fiscal hawk who asks the hard questions, while also being one of the most socially progressive voices on Council.

Fiscal Hawk: Asking The Tough Questions

Alec believes every city dollar should be justified by real results for residents. He:

  • Challenges expensive contracts and consultant fees that mainly benefit developers
  • Demands clear accountability for how spending improves services, safety, and affordability in Ward 2
  • Caps campaign donations at $25 and pledges the majority of his councillor’s salary to local community services; leading by example of public service; so he answers to people, not special interests.

Social Progressive: Investing In People

At the same time, Alec stands with those who are struggling:

  • Supports shelter workers, food-bank staff, and social service providers who keep people from falling through the cracks.
  • Stands with frontline workers – hospital staff, police, fire, paramedics, and other public-service workers – for fair wages and fair conditions.
  • Advocates for stronger support for low-income residents, seniors, people experiencing homelessness, and anyone underserved in Guelph.
  • Our community cares for each other. He promises not to cut social services; instead he will hunt down inefficiencies and reallocate savings to where people need them most.

Putting Fiscal and Social Together

Alec’s approach is simple:

Hold the line on reckless spending, but step up on smart, humane investments

  • He supports reforesting the contaminated IMICO site as a green lung and carbon sink.
  • He backs a public washroom at Guelph Central Station, and a permanent stage at Saint George’s Square to make downtown more inclusive, accessible and welcoming.
  • He supports continuing hospital levy so Guelph can build a second hospital that actually serves Guelph and beyond.

On Council: A Different Kind Of Voice

If elected, Alec will be the councillor who questions big budgets and expensive projects; while also pushing hardest for social services, affordable housing, transit dignity and environmental justice.

Alec believes municipal politics should be about Guelph; not partisan politics and ideological narratives and theatrics. We should be focused on “Guelph First”; meeting the needs and expectations of all our residents. This means reliable transit for commuters, affordable living without breaking the bank, lower taxes that ease family budgets, and real accountability in every Council vote.
